The Consulate of Mexico in Saint Paul, Minnesota, on Monday. March 7., visited the Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota’s First Generation FG scholars who are recipients of the consulate’s Institute of Mexicans Abroad (IME) Fellowship Program.

The IME Fellowship Program is designed to enable students who are of Mexican descent, to further their education. “I thought it was pretty cool that the consulate took interest in the FGI program especially investing in the future of students whose parents came from Mexico,” said FG Scholar Cesar Gonzalez.

mexicanconsulate02FG Scholar and IME Fellowship recipient Cinthya Cazares, a junior art studio major said,“The Mexican Consulate of Saint Paul has contributed to my FGI scholarship for the past three years now. When I first met Head Consul Alberto Fierro, he spoke about how the Mexican government was interested in supporting young Mexican students who are studying abroad. That connection with my home country means a lot to me. Head consul Fierro also met with another IME fellowship recipient, Edgar Mejia-Aguilar, a freshman majoring in criminal justice. Head Consul Fierro said, “It was wonderful to visit St. Mary’s University in Winona and witness all of what is being done for migrant students. I enjoyed learning from the students about their aspirations and professional prospects for the future.”

Mónica Cruz-Zorilla, who works in community affairs for the consulate and who accompanied Fierro on the visit to Saint Mary’s, said, “The IME-Becas scholarship program recognizes all of the hard work our students undertake to succeed in their higher education endeavors. We hope that through the funds our government is able to allocate to their education, which are complemented by scholarships they obtain in Saint Mary’s University, our students may realize that they have a binational community invested in their future success.” Cinthya said it was “great” to meet with Consul Fierro and Cruz-Zorilla, because “they are very understanding of the circumstances that immigrant students face. The lunch with Brother William was full of great conversation and, hopefully, great opportunities ahead. I thank them endlessly for their charitable and unwavering support.” Saint Mary’s University President Brother William Man, FSC joined Head Consul Fierro for lunch with Cinthya and Edgar.
